Issue #55 - "You're Not Alone" by Will Holmes Jr. - Feb 2007

Introduction: It could be something that happened to you or didn’t happen to you in your past. It could be something or someone you are dealing with right now. It could be mental, emotional, physical, financial, spiritual, or even comical at times. It may bother you every hour, every day, or it may only get under your skin every now and then. But, whatever and whoever it is, you have some issue or problem that just causes you pain, worry, anger, fear or jealousy and makes you wonder what life (or a specific situation) would be like if that problem didn’t exist. You may look at others and think they must have it easy since they don’t have to deal with what you have to deal with. Well, everyone, including myself, has thoughts like this at some point in their life, so...

YOU'RE NOT ALONE by Will Holmes Jr.

Truth be told,
We all have issues that we’re dealin’ wit’
Some of us just do a better job concealin’ it
So, I’m gonna provide some healin’ before you quit…

Give you confirmation
That you ain’t the only one out there crazy in isolation.
Trust me, I understand your situation
I suffer from the same frustration.

I know you got at least one problem
Or one thought
That just won’t leave you alone...
It’s eating away at you from the inside-out
Sometimes the pain can hurt so much,
you just wanna SHOUT...
... but you can’t...
Cause somebody might hear you
So you build a wall around your emotions
And won’t let nobody come near you...
...Now everybody fears you.

You wonder why YOU have to deal with THIS issue
The more you think about it
The more you’re reaching for tissue
Wishing this problem could have missed you...
Passed on by,
Landed on the next guy
Cause in your eyes
His problems seem sweet like pie
So you wish you could trade in your storms
for his crystal blue skies...
... But if you really knew what he was dealing with inside
... if you had to go through that, you’d surely die
So this is what we must learn by and by:

If “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure,”
Then, one man’s burden can be another man’s pleasure.
But, if we just put it all together
No one can truly judge who’s life is "better."

I mean, people look at me like,
“Mr. Poet, you just seem to have it all together
You seem to never get stressed or depressed
No matter the season or the weather. And that book...”

"Seeking Solace..." - yea, I wrote it,
But that was God talking
I was just quoting it.
Yes, I’ve got joy, but I also have problems
But with JOY comes FAITH,
So I know my God will help me overcome... or just solve ‘em.

You’ve got to understand,
Nothing has happened to you
That isn’t “common to man
In other words, if you’re going through,
Somebody else is too
And probably worse than you.

So whatever problems you’re dealing wit’
It’s ok if you’re concealing it (to us)
But take it to God (the one you can trust)
So He can calm your spirit quick
Lighten your load
And ease your mind a bit.

He can make the biggest problems seem small
If you leave everything in His hands
He’ll make the most stressful situations
seem non-existent at all.

RELATED SCRIPTURES

I Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is
common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Phillipians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ which
strengtheneth me.

  • James 1:13-15

  • VOCABULARY from poem:

    Common to man - experienced by most people;

    VOCABULARY from scripture:

above that ye are able - more than you are able

    common to man - experienced by most people;

    strengtheneth - strengthens;

    suffer - force; allow by reason of indifference; passively allow;

    (My explanation of scripture selection)

Many of us have heard the phrase: "God will never put more on you than you can bear." This is the quote I had in mind when I wrote this poem. We all have our specific set of circumstances, but they are all situations we are able to handle with God's help. When we try without Him is when we seem to fail.

Back to the quote... I was sure I could just look through some scripture and find this phrase SOMEWHERE in the Bible. I mean, it's used so much, it just HAS to be in there. I looked in Proverbs, I looked in Matthew, then in Mark, then Luke, then John. I checked Ecclesiastes... Genesis... Revelations... gotta be in there somewhere! Well, to my surprise, it wasn't.

1 Corinthians 10:13 was all I could find. And that was talking about temptation... not problems and burdens.

But God opened my eyes to something. When you are burdened with problems, you fall easily to temptations. When you are dealing with problems and emotional issues you feel you can't handle, you usually turn to "quick fixes" to ease the pain (or atleast we think we are easing the pain) like alcohol, drugs, sex, etc...

So you could say our problems tempt us to do sinful things, such as the young girl who is sexually assaulted and consequently turns to promiscuity (having casual or random sex with many different partners) looking for a love to heal her pain; Or we are tempted to feel anger and jealousy towards others who are the cause of our problems or who we feel don't have to deal with the type of problems we have, such as the person who never lets go of their anger towards their spouse that left them, or the young man who is jealous of his friends who have plenty money while he struggles with three jobs. On the contrary, God must think very highly of you and your strength if He knows you can handle all that you are going through. Realize that God will use your problems to bless you and others through your perseverance and strength. Prove Him right!

I also thought about the fact that when you are at your lowest point and knee deep in issues, you are "tempted" to stop believing in God's power to help you and change your life. You may even start directing your anger and hate towards God, feeling like He must not care about you if He let this happen to you.

God will not allow us to be "tempted" above what we can handle and also provides a way to "escape" the temptations that our problems bring us (1 Corinthians 10:13). And, Phillipians 4:13 states that He has also given us additional strength through Christ. Instead of being tempted to turn in other directions for help, turn to God to gain understanding and seek His love to bring you through. Remember, "If he brought you to it, He will bring you through it. Sorry, I don't think that quote is in the Bible either, but you'll have to do your own research on that one!
