Issue #62 - "Prescription for Addiction" by Éric L Farrell - December 2007

Introduction: Although everyone isn’t hooked on illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or sexual impurities, there are many addictions that we may deal with that aren’t often mentioned and won’t be mentioned because, by comparison, they seem insignificant or innocent. But any addiction, if we don’t break free from it, will control us, knock us off course, cause life to be harder than it has to be, keep us from achieving the level of success that God wants for us, keep us from receiving our blessings, keep us from being the best we can be, and will ALWAYS waste our time.

Addictions often keep us from developing spiritually, physically, mentally, and financially, and eventually cause our actions to become selfish and misguided. We end up in the wrong place at the wrong time because we are following our desire instead of following God’s directions. We end up working toward fulfilling that desire before fulfilling God’s instructions; taking care of our own “needs” before others’ needs. You’d think everyone around you would see the benefit in helping you break free, but unfortunately misery loves company. Many people would rather see you addicted to at least one sin so they feel more comfortable holding on to theirs, but God wants you to be free from it all. It is possible, and God will help you?

You may be saying, “I’ve tried my best, but it’s too hard.” Yes, it may be hard, but have you really tried your best? Have you resisted temptation to the point of bleeding, or did you give up when resisting started to get uncomfortable and maybe even hurt a little? These are the questions I’ve asked myself, and my answer was often that which is written in Hebrews 12:4 “Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.”

"PRESCRIPTION FOR ADDICTION" by Éric L Farrell

Now to the guys with an addiction
Maybe your addiction is less of an addiction
And more of a way to mentally escape your affliction

Maybe you should try reading a little bit of fiction
Drugs, sex (fornication), alcohol and violence are not good for quick fixing
Because their side effects, I mean after effects, are something you likely won't be missing

Ok now, about this fiction... it probably shouldn't be a book that talks about your addiction.
In fact, it probably shouldn't even mention your affliction or your area of stress
Because that wouldn't be much of an escape, would it?
How could you forget about your mess?
And yes, TV and movies may be other safe escapes, that is, if they weren't draped in sexual depictions of legs, butts and breasts

Because men, being visual creatures, would probably do too much looking and not enough listen
Because when it comes to those round things, we've got another potential addiction
Like basketballs, and rims and watches and other circular things that glisten
So for the sake of all unmentioned, start with a little bit of fiction

Now don't panic... There's other types of fiction besides romantic
You got mystery, suspense, comedic, classic, and probably even poetic
They may not be the best sellers, but they do exist on this planet
And although I haven't written them, I don't take them for granted

And happen to hate reading, grab the videogame controller
And in the midst of your turmoil, this may help hold you over
Pick up a hobby, go fishing, go running, bowling, or weight lifting
There's plenty of quick escapes from life that allow you to stay sober

Things that when you do them over and over, you'll get better instead of worse
And your contribution to earth will be a blessing instead of a curse
And eventually you can confront the things that cause your nerves to jerk
Not the addictions, I mean the things that caused you to revert back to the addictions
You can deal with your relationship, you can deal with that situation at work
When you identify the root of the problem that’s driving you berserk
But until then, let’s try some safer ways of dealing with our hurt.

RELATED SCRIPTURES

Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. -Hebrews 12:4

Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted of God:” for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own
lusts, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. –James 1:13-16

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. -1 Corinthians 10:13

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, “BE YE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” -1 Peter 1:13-16
